1 Virginia vs 16. Gardner Webb

Virginia Cavaliers

All-time appearances -23
All-time record – 29-22
Last appearance – 2018 – Lost to #16 UMBC

Virginia made history in 2018, becoming the first 1 seed to ever lose to a 16 seed, losing in blow out fashion to UMBC. Prior to last year’s shocking, the Cavs had won a Tournament game in 4 consecutive tournaments, with their last win coming in 2017 as a 5 seed over UNC-Wilmington.

Gardner-Webb Bulldogs

All-time record – N/A

Gardner-Webb upset Campbell and than beat Radford to win the Big South for the first time and make their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Bulldogs are 0-3 all-time in postseason play losing in the Division II Regional Quarterfinals. In Division ! they lost in the 2013 CIT to Eastern Kentucky and the 2015 CBI to Colorado.

8. Ole Miss vs 9. Oklahoma

Last appearance – 2015 – Lost to Xavier in second round

Ole Miss is appearing in their first NCAA tournament since 2015. They’ve only advanced to the Sweet 16 once, in 2001.

Oklahoma Sooners

Last appearance – 2018 – Lost to Rhode Island in first round

Lon Kruger has been Oklahoma head coach for 8 years and is overseeing his 6th Tournament team. Kruger is 6-5 with Oklahoma in the tournament, including a Final Four appearance in 2016.

5. Wisconsin vs 12. Oregon

Wisconsin Badgers

Last appearance – 2017 – Lost in Sweet 16 to Florida

2018 snapped a 19 year tournament appearance streak for the Badgers. From 2014-2017, Wisconsin has made (at least) the Sweet 16 each year, including two Final Fours and a National Championship game loss. 

Oregon Ducks

Last appearance – 2017 – Lost in Final Four to UNC 

Ducks missed tournament in 2018, following a Final Four run in 2017. They were poised to miss the tournament in 2019, but won the PAC-12 tournament as the 6 seed. Ducks have won at least 1 tournament game in each of their last 5 tournament appearances and have gone to, at least, the Sweet 16 in each of their last two (2016, 2017).

Wisconsin has beat Oregon in 5 out of 7 meetings, most recently winning in 2014 and 2013. Oregon’s two wins came in 1952 and 1981.


4. Kansas State vs 13. UC Irvine

Last appearance – 2018 – Lost in Elite 8 to Loyola-Chicago

Prior to last year’s Elite 8 run, Kansas State hadn’t advanced to the second weekend since 2010 (lost in Sweet 16). Coach Bruce Weber is 4-4 since his arrival to KState in 2012

UC Irvine Anteaters

UC Irvine’s only tournament appearance was in 2015 as a 13 seed, losing to Louisville.

Villanova Wildcats

Last appearance – 2018 – Won National Championship

Villanova has won 2 of the last 3 NCAA Tournaments. Minus their runs in 2016 and 2018, you’d have to go back to 2009 to find the last time Villanova made it out of the first weekend.

Saint Mary’s Gaels

All-time appearances – 10
All-time record – 5-9
Last appearance – 2017 – Lost to #2 Arizona in second round

Randy Bennett has been the Gaels head coach since 2001 and is 4-6. In the current format of the Tournament, their only Sweet 16 appearance was 2010.

These teams have met 3 times, not since 2009 when Saint Mary’s won. They also won the very first meeting in 1992, giving them a 2-1 edge over Villanova.


3. Purdue vs 14. Old Dominion

Purdue Boilermakers

All-time record – 39-30
Last appearance – 2018 – Lost in Sweet 16 to Texas Tech 

2019 is Purdue’s 5 straight tournament. 2000 is the last time they made it to the Elite 8 and haven”t made the Final Four since 1980. Matt Painter has been Purdue head coach since 2005 and is 12-10 overall in tournament games. 

Old Dominion Monarchs

All-time appearances – 12 
All-time record – 3-11
Last appearance – 2011 – Lost to Butler in first round 

ODU last made the tournament in 2011 and last won a game in 2010, beating Notre Dame in the first round, before losing to Butler in round two. They beat Villanova in a 3OT classic in 1995.

Purdue has won both previous games against Old Dominion, in 2015 and 1978.


7. Cincinnati vs 10. Iowa

Cincinnati Bearcats

All-time appearances – 33
All-time record – 46-29
Last appearance – 2018 – Lost in the second round to Nevada

Cincinnati has made 9 straight tournament appearances under head coach Mick Cronin. During that time they are 6-8 and have just one Sweet 16 appearance. Bearcats have won their first round game in 3 of the last 4 years.

Iowa Hawkeyes

All-time appearances -26
All-time record- 29-27
Last appearance – 2016 – Lost in second round to Villanova

Iowa has made one Sweet 16 since 1988 and that was in 1999. In the 13 tournament appearances since 1988, Iowa has won at least 1 game with the exception of 3 years (2005, 2006, 2014).

Cincinnati is 6-2 vs Iowa, winning the most recent meeting in 2005. Prior to that, they hadn’t played until 1980, when Iowa last won.


2. Tennessee vs 15. Colgate

Last appearance – 2018 – Lost to Loyola-Chicago in second round

Tennessee has never made the Final Four. In 22 appearances they have 7 Sweet 16s and just 1 Elite 8 (2010). 5 of those 7 Sweet 16s have come since 2000. 

Colgate Raiders

All-time appearances – 3
All-time record – 0-2
Last appearance – 1996 – Lost to UConn in first round

Colgate’s only two appearances came in 1995 and 1996, both as 16 seeds. They were competitive both times losing by 14 and 9 points, respectively.

In 2 meetings, Colgate is 2-0 vs Tennessee with the wins coming in 1955 and 1960.
